Mind The Gap . . .
In the bad old days of apartheid, Hillbrow was Johannesburg's most cosmopolitan district, immigrants filling the high rise apartments, continental cafes and slick nightspots providing the entertainment. After the 'revolution' it became a massive slum, in which few white people dare venture. One is my pal Denis Beckett, author and TV personality - and he was my guide today for a quick return to the 'Brow. There is a different vibrancy these days, the slick European scene replaced with the more ragged sound, smell and feel of Africa - including holes in the pavements where metal covers have been stolen for their scrap value . . .
