Penzance

We had a wander around Penzance today taking in the town's history and culture.

At the top of Market Jew Street stands this statue of Humphry Davy.  He was born in Penzance in 1778 and was a bit of a polymath.  In 1815 he turned his attention to inventing a safety lamp for miners - the Davy Lamp.

Market Jew comes from the Cornish 'marghas iou' meaning Thursday Market.  The Market Hall building behind Humphry Davy opened for trading in 1838.

We spent a couple of hours in the rather good Exchange Gallery which shows contemporary works.  A very nice cafe too!
