Good weather for ducks

380km drive today from Pimba to Coober Pedy. What surprised me most was the water everywhere. There are low lying salt lakes around here which fill up occasionally after rain. They are full and up to 50 km across where we were today. They had big floods here a few months ago and all the roads and rail were cut for weeks. They are still repairing the road. The unsealed roads are still cut causing many travellers to alter their plans. We decided to stay on the sealed roads as our van is not made for off road conditions.

The sat navigation in the car only had one set of instructions,  “turn right in 376km”. It would be hard to get lost as there is only one road.

It rained for most of the day and I just rugged up and went for a walk around the caravan park with an umbrella to get some fresh air. It’s very muddy with puddles. I thought Coober Pedy was hot, dry and dusty.

This town was settled after miners found Opal here. The population is 1762 with about that many tourists I would guess. It is stony, treeless desert so the rain is welcome for the locals. Summer temps get up to 48° so they have dug into the ground for their homes, churches, shops etc.  we are going on a tour in the morning so I will find out more about the place.
