2022 Saturday — In the Kitchen
Every now and then my kitchen flirts with me. The idea of getting involved dances in my thoughts — sliding a spatula along the smooth edge of a clear glass mixing bowl; twirling a fork thru a mound of brown sugar with just enough drops of water to turn it into liquid gold — then I consider the effort required and the mess I will make; the dance floor remains empty. I’d rather just read a book or turn pages in a magazine.
This afternoon after reading a few pages in Erin French’s Finding Freedom: A Cook’s Story, I donned my apron (the one with galloping horses on the front) and stepped onto the dance floor for a little practice exercise.
For this evening’s dessert, dark chocolate cupcake batter poured into little foil cups and placed into a blazing oven. Then an attempt at transforming leftovers into luscious-ness by topping an already baked meatloaf with a sauce blended of brown sugar, tart mustard, and smooth ketchup.
Every now and then that flirtatious kitchen catches me; then we cha-cha-cha! Today, the first Saturday in June, was one of those every now and then moments.
