Goolwa Barrage

The Goolwa barrage is the last in a series of barrages along the River Murray designed to regulate water flow and maintain levels along the river.

Just a few kilometres downstream is where the river runs out into the sea.
A short walk over nearby sandhills takes you to the coastline with waves pounding the shore.

But here it is all calm and tranquilty as the river lazes it's way towards that same ocean.
We walked out onto the barrage greeted by a heron and roosting pelicans.
Seals basked in the autumn sunshine as we watched the barrage open and close to let a group of canoers through.

A perfect day!
