Looking For Nightjars
Jacqui had a sea swim in the afternoon and just before sunset we went looking for nightjars- strange and secretive birds , which are camouflaged like the bark of a tree, and only emerge at nightfall, and announce themselves with a. chirring noise before appearing in a ghostly manner out of the night. They are quite a big bird. We go every year about this time to a heathland near Newton Abbott. The paths across it stand out because the clay soil is almost white. We were lucky to see them several times. This is the site of a Civil War battle, and it is marked with a simple wooden cross. We were looking for ghosts as well as spectral birds. In the west there was a glorious sunset, and in the east an orange moon rising.(extras).
Bird of the day was the impossible to photograph nightjar
