St Columba Church,

An early grave slab with a fine collection of mortality symbols from St. Columba Church, Point, Isle of Lewis. The symbols include an hour glass, skull, long bones gravediggers' tools, the deid bell and a coffin They are carved in high relief and must have had a powerful effect as a stark reminder of mortality.

The Church, dedicated to St Columbais thought to have been built on the site of a cell occupied by St Catan who lived in the 6th or 7th century. The present ruins (see extra) date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The chancel was used as a burial place by the Mcleods of Lewis from the early 15th century.

The Church occupies a precarious cliff top position and is threatened by erosion.
