Lindisfarne

A day on the Holy Island.. across the causeway cut off twice a day, this was a retreat and base for St Cuthbert to spread Christianity across the north of England.
The ruins of the Priory are spectacular, amazingly tall with a ‘rainbow arch’ sweeping between two towers, and built of glowing red sandstone.
We walked out to St Cuthberts Isle which is also isolated by the tide and had views of the grey seals and mergansers. The lookout tower gives 360 views around the island and down into the priory.
Then we went to Gertrude Jeykll Garden, a small walled garden now maintained by the NT volunteers but once planted by Jeykll herself.
After a delicious gelato we finished our day with a walk through the flower rich dunes, full of orchids, and the invasive piri piri burr which had to be removed from Pepper and Rob before leaving this enchanting place.
