JUNETEENTH RAIN CHAIN
There is a slight chance of RAIN tomorrow & Wednesday, so this
RAIN CHAIN could be more than just a decorative element in this
alleyway garden.
Today is JUNETEENTH, our new federal & bank holiday in the US; although the actual celebration was yesterday. It is a 157 year old holiday that was formalized by Pres. Joe Biden last year, on June 17, 2021.
It commemorates the day, in 1865, when a group of slaves learned they were free from slavery. This was 2 months after the actual end of the
US Civil War; & over 2 years after Pres. Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, ending slavery.
This holiday is usually celebrated with cookouts, parades, church services,
even a poetry & music festival. By classifying this a federal holiday,
it becomes a holiday for everyone, not just the Black community. It will not end the rampant racism in the US, but can "foster a dialogue about the trauma that has resulted from the enslavement of 4 million people for more
than 250 years." - -Fabiola Cineas
