The longest day

We shall squash them in the morning
We shall squeeze them in the evening.
On beaches.
On mountains.
And In fields.
And if it is our lot
To fight on alone
So we shall
Safe in the god vouched certainty
That potatoes
Shall be eaten
Whether great or small
In this United Kingdom
From Scilly to Shetland
In this fierce crucible of democracy
Freedom
And varying qualities of chip oil or dripping.
And when the history of these times is written
By bearded men
Looking out o’er British seas
It shall be said
That never were the the lives of so many
Squashed with such dedication
That this island nation
Could be free.
