Snapshots of my world

Hay Bale Season!

It's that time of year where lots of the agricultural landscape is filled with hay bales. As I strolled under the blue skies, I wondered why some hay bales are square or rectangular, whilst others are round.

A quick Google revealed, as I suspected, it is largely a result of the baling equipment. Older balers commonly produce square or rectangular bales and newer balers make round bales of hay!

I also discovered that square bales tend to be smaller and lighter, with round bales usually larger and heavier. This may influence a farmer's decision; larger, round bales if they've lots of livestock to feed but smaller, square ones if they've fewer animals to feed.

Every day is a school day!!
