Labyrinth Spider

This interesting creature builds the most amazing web - read about the Labyrinth spider here and it's amazing nest.  There were several in this particular bush and it's the obvious web that draws the eye,  It still took a bit of finding as , although the round entrance to its labyrinth is relatively obvious, the spider itself is well camouflaged and lurking at the entrance ready to deter serious predators. It was very difficult to get the lens near enough as I didn't want to damage the web at all and, of course, there was inadequate light.  Exciting to see this little creature again as they are relatively uncommon.

This was a visit to Woton House, a relatively unassuming property in the depths of the Buckinghamshire countryside.  Well worth a visit, although it's only the vast grounds that can be accessed and it doesn't attract attention.  We were given a 'conducted tour' by a friend who works there but anyone can go.  Vast numbers of dragonflies were around the enormous lake (extra) and there are also wild orchids growing.

The day was hot and we appreciated the shade from the trees in the grounds.  Fortunately, the evening has cooled things down.
