Restoration
In the foreground the Fraserburgh Temperance Fountain which has been beautifully restored as part of an iniative to preserve, restore and celebrate Fraserburgh's architectural heritage. In the background are the Old Psrish Kirk and the Saltoun Chambers.
The Temperance Jubilee Fountain was provided by members of a Temperance Society in 1889 the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee - a time when consumption of alcohol was problematic. This was partly because due to the frequency of outbreaks of cholera, caused by contaminated water, many public pumps and wells were closed so people drank beer instead.
The Fountain was made by the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow and would have been ordered from a catalogue. The original oaraffin lantern on top of the Fountain has been replaced by an electric light and the cast iron Fountain has been repainted and restored to its former glory as a source of free drinking water.
