Hilton of Cadbol

Yet another magnificent Pictish cross slab - this is a replica of the 8th century Hilton of Cadbol Cross slab. Which inorder to preserve the original was erected on the former site of the original. The reverse of the slab (extra) shows a hunting scene in which the main rider is a woman riding side saddle.

The original stone fell over soon after it was erected but was re-erected. It had the misfortune to be cut off from the base in 1676 for use as a grave marker. The base was subsequently lost and has only recently been rediscovered. The original stone is on display in the NMS.

The stone stands close to the remains of a medieval Chapel. The site, where only grassy footings remain,  is supposed to have been used for the burial of unbaptised
babies and suicides until as recently as the late 1800s.
