Anderton Boat Lift

The anderton Boat Lift was an igneous idea the raise and lower narrow boat from the River Weaver 50 feet (15.2 metres) up to the Trent & Mersey Canal.
Built in 1875 and in use for over 100 years until corrosion on the hydraulics stopped it in 1983. Restoration started in 2001 and was re-opened in 2002 with the hydraulics for caissons being converted from water to oil, it was the salt content of the water that was the main cause of corrosion.
Access to the lift was made tricky as road works caused a long diversion and then the opportunity for the boat trip was off as they were fully booked.
The Extra is a collage of the narrow boat dropping down to the River Weaver.
