Act now?
Portland City Hall. Someone, perhaps associated with XR, spraypainted ACT NOW (HOURGLASS) ON CLIMATE EMERGENCY. The closed door and utter inactivity tells the story. Though some people are acting now, it's late. I see birds dying on Scottish beaches, drought in the "breadbasket" of California, heatdomes in places that are normally cool, reversal of reproductive rights, protection of gun rights, more money for an increasingly militarized and racist police force, and the absurdity of an ex-President who still thinks he can convert this country to a white supremacist stronghold. It's worrying.
But I take heart from Mariame Kaba, whose motto, "Hope is a discipline" inspires me often. Her latest phrases are "Lean into uncertainty," which is surely the best hope we have; and "Let this radicalize you," as opposed to letting this paralyze, depress, or silence you. This last phrase is available on a T-shirt, all proceeds from which go to support West Alabama Women's Center, which provides services to southern women who need them.
