Well Hunt

The morning rain cleared and we ventured out on a well hunt. The first was tucked away beyond Minard strand - in itself wild and remote; a storm beach with colossal boulders and astonishing colours, overlooked by the gaunt remains of a castle. The well is dedicated to St John the Baptist and has a golden fish and a cure for headaches (! Hmm, remember what happened to St John?) The second well was in a spectacular setting overlooking the ocean, dedicated to the BVM and sharing a cure, with the now disused well dedicated to St Finán, of pestilence! It had been much visited during the Spanish Flu and probably during Covid. We then repaired to the South Pole Inn , which Tom Crean, who had been one of the crew on Shackleton and Scott's polar expeditions, had once owned.
