Corncockle

Corncockle
( Agrostemma githago)

As the name suggests Corncockle is a plant of cultivated corn fields. Evidence suggests that it was first brought to Britain from Europe by Iron Age farmers some 2400 years ago.
It was a serious weed in the 16th century.
Now exceptionally rare as a cornfield flower, but often sown as part of a wildflower seed mix. Which is how it got to grow in our garden.
I planted the wild flower seeds in a pot last year. They all grew quite well, but so far only one corncockle plant has grown this year. Also no cornflowers or poppies this year. However there are plenty of corn chamomile, and corn marigolds.

Today has been a mixture of sunshine and showers. Great growing weather for the garden.
We have enjoyed our first sugar snap peas tonight, along with more purple sprouting broccoli. The runner beans are covered in flowers, but no sign of any beans yet.
It’s all ups and downs with a garden, especially when growing vegetables.

Can’t believe it is the 1st of July. Those first 6 months have flown.

Many thanks to fellow blipper Mollyblobs for identifying yesterday’s butterflies.
