Creating a Vacuum
The universe strongly resists there being an absence of matter anywhere - things need to be spread out as far and as evenly as possible. During this experiment, we talked about the behavior of matter - specifically gaseous matter - and how science can understand and explore things one can not see. Pretty profound science class, actually.
We created vaccums by lighting a piece of paper on fire, putting it into the jar, plopping the balloon across the opening, and watching the balloon get sucked inside once the fire went out.It was also a lot of fun, because we ended up trying to suck hardboiled eggs into narrow-necked chutney bottles (and it worked!).
