Road Trip Day Four
After an excellent breakfast (with yoghurt, fruit compote, perfectly poached eggs) we set off on the next leg. It wasn’t raining, but it looked threatening, so no change there. At least we were not trudging over the mountains to get to a loch, to sit there all day, hoping to catch a fish, then throw it back in - which is what our new friend was going to do for the day.
We took the single track road round by Drumbeg, Clashnessie and Lochinver, and quite a road it was… steep hills, sharp bends, and even a few ‘blind summits’. We passed llamas, a couple of beaches, some ‘do-er uppers’ in prime spots and, back on the main road, the beautiful Kylesku Bridge.
Our new friend at breakfast suggested we carry on to Achiltibuie, because we’d get a good view of Stac Pollaidh, one of the iconic mountains in the west. But with the low lying clouds, we suspected we might not see any mountain tops, and it was quite a detour.
Coming in to the big town of Ullapool it was briefly sunny, and there was a huge cruise ship moored in the bay. But by the time it sailed off later, the mist had rolled in, we didn’t see any people out on deck, so I’m sure all the passengers retired to the bar - what a shame there were no spectacular views as they cruised out of the bay.
We had a wander round the town - didn’t take long - and had a splendid ice cream, about half the price of a trendy ‘artisan’ Edinburgh one.
We had dinner in ‘The Ceilidh Place’ and what a good choice that was. It’s pretty famous in town for food and music, and it did not disappoint. We had plenty of seafood, which we’d been disappointed at the lack of so far on our trip - we had hot smoked trout, salt & pepper squid starters, with sea bass and sea trout for mains.
We were welcomed at tonight’s abode with a whisky and shortbread. Nice touch.
Also, Boris Johnson resigned today!!
