School concert
In the mid 16th century, a young lady was lucky to escape injury when a stray arrow pierced her hat. As a mark of gratitude for her escape, she vowed to do something for posterity. Many years later, the thrice widowed Dame Alice Owen was now very rich, and fulfilled her vow by founding a school.
This year, that school celebrates its 400th anniversary. It is doing so in style. Today, members of the school community (almost exclusively pupils and ex-pupils) performed a concert to a packed Royal Albert Hall in London. The concert included a choir, a dance group, a short drama production, solo performances on piano, saxophone and guitar, two soul bands, a concert band and a symphony orchestra, as well as a lively and energetic performance of Gahu, an exciting drum and song performance originating, I believe, from Ghana, and involving around 250 performers! The standard of performance throughout was unbelievably high, showing off the amazing talents of the youngsters.
Not many schools could (or would dare to) put on a dazzling show like this at such a fantastic venue. For a state comprehensive school, it is exceptional. I am delighted that my children were educated here, and I am happy now, since retiring from my career job, to be working here in a support role.
Back blipped, because we didn't get home until 1 am.
