Northern Isles Day 11
After loading up with fresh water and disposing of waste at the marina, and leaving our £20 in the honesty box, we headed along the road to Lerwick.
First stop was the museum, and what a treat that was. It was so well laid out and I’m glad we waited till nearer the end of our stay as it meant we were more familiar with the geology and history of the islands. We found upstairs, about more modern times of interest too, even though a lot of exhibits could have been relevant to anywhere in Scotland. It comes to something when items we used are now museum pieces. I was interested to see that Shetland whalers had carried Shakleton’s coffin to his grave in Gritvyken, South Georgia, as we visited his grave and toasted him with Guinness in 2011.
We left the van in the museum car park and had a potter in town. My foot was really annoyingly painful. I think it’s the plantar fasciitis back. We got as far as Jimmy Perez’s cottage before turning back. In a charity shop I got an Elizabeth David cook book. Son in law Luke sorted for his birthday. The illustrations are beautiful.
The blip is a young woman busking with her fiddle. (I put some cash in her case of course). Mr C was on a hunt for a Guardian - it’ll be good today about the current fiasco.
Our spot for tonight is near Nesting by the water - it’s quite a stiff breeze blowing. The temperature got up to 13C today. Friends at home are enjoying a heatwave.
Ella enjoyed her sports day and Nathaniel’s performance in Encanto was a success. I see he’s still not had a hair cut. James sent another WhatsApp of him reading.
