A Large Lame Duck, Soho, London
I decided today was going to be a happy day and therefore strapped on my happy (Adidas) shoes (see previous blips). It certainly helped that it was a beautiful summer's day. Friday's are much better train wise (i.e. they are much less crowded) so I almost, very nearly, enjoyed my journey up to work. I take somewhere between 15 - 20 trains during a full working week so being very near the finish line on a Friday always comes with a massive sense of relief. When I got into London I went straight to my coffee shop to get my cappuccino. The owner is a lovely genial Brazilian man who always greets me with a "hello amigo!," which never fails to cheer me up.
Funnily, enough I listened to a podcast about about Adi (short for Adolf, now why didn't he use his full name!) Dassler and his brother Rudolf, who founded the famous company, this morning. Adi was the technical genius and Rudolf was the charismatic salesman and together they created and sold the famous footwear and clothing we know today. Of course, as the company took off in the Thirties the Nazi regime became part of their story as well and the facts about this period are both fascinating and dark. One of the very interesting details about the 1936 Olympics is that Jesse Owens wore Adidas shoes while winning his gold medals.
After the war the brothers fell out so badly that Rudolf left to form his own sporting goods company, Puma. The startling part of the story is he set up his factory in the same town, Herzogenaugrach, as Adi. Families in the town were torn apart as some employees and relative sided with Adi and others with Rudolf. The warring factions did not socialise together and even avoided each other in the town's shops!
Today's image is, of course, a visual reference to Bo Jo. I have never felt less sorry for any person ever. He brought it all on himself and deserves our utter contempt. He had no moral compass, no integrity and no shame at all. He should be dragged out kicking and screaming by next week and not allowed to stay on even a moment longer.
To finish off my happy day I decided to play great first tracks from some of my albums collection. Not all the albums hold up in their entirety but as introductions to the artists' music they are just brilliant so here they are:
Till I Met Thee by Cody Chestnutt (from the album Landing On A Hundred)
My Baby Don't Understand Me by Natalie Prass (from her debut album of the same name)
Summertime by The Sundays (from the album Static & Silence)
How Glad I Am by Chrissy Hynde (from the album Val Bon Voe)
My day finished with meeting my brother off my last train of the week and going straight to a pub garden for a cold pint of beer. An excellent way to finish a happy day.
