The Kelpies

Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh was great experience and we also had afternoon tea there. In the afternoon we rented a car (Vauxhall Grandland x) and continued our journey to north.

In Falkirk one of my dreams came true: I saw The Kelpies! They are amazing!

The Kelpies are two 30-metre-high horse head sculptures. They are 30 m tall and weight more than 300 tonnes each. The works of art, created by artist Andy Scott, have become iconic on the landscape after being modelled on real-life icons of times gone by — Clydesdale horses Duke and Baron. The Kelpies represent the lineageof the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, ploughs, barges and coalships that shaped the geographical layout of Falkirk.

We also went to see the Falkirk Wheel. It is a rotating boat lift, that connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The wheel raises boats by 24 metres, but the Union Canal is still 11 metres higher than the aqueduct which meets the wheel. Boats must also pass through a pair of locks between the top of the wheel and the Union Canal.

We were in Crianlarich at 9 p.m., where we’ll stay in Inverardran House. Beautiful landscape everywhere!
