Woodstock and Snoopy

We were out early to take Spike for a walk before it got too hot. On the way home we drove up Los Alamos Road to see if we could tell what 'fire debris removal road' meant. It didn't look much different than it has ever looked, but a picture of the mountainside* opposite reveals that there is still plenty of fire debris to be removed. The roads over there were made by firefighters to allow better access to very steep terrain.

These figures from 'Peanuts' are still dotted around town. I think it was some kind of long ago fundraiser which allowed businesses to choose their peanuts figure and decorate it in turn for a donation. Or maybe it was just some kind of city beautification project. Charles Schulz had his home and studio in Santa Rosa for many years. He died in 2000, but in addition to the 'Peanuts' characters still dotted around town,  he leaves a lasting legacy in the form of of the Charles Schulz Museum and Snoopy's Home Ice in addition to his iconic comic strip.

Interesting factoid I learned...Snoopy was based on his own childhood pet who was called not 'Sniffy' as he apparently wanted to name the 'Peanuts' beagle, but Spike!

We found Woodstock and Snoopy, newly painted and looking very spiffy at King's Nursery where we went this morning in search of some purple lantana to replace the rosemary that burned like a torch. We planted a succulent that was supposed to trail over the wall the way the rosemary did, but it failed to do anything, probably because some tunneling rodent had excavated all the area around its roots. John has now dug big holes, put in gopher baskets and replaced the missing soil with compost and fertilizer. It was too hot to plant purple lantana (Dana's recommendation) by the time we got home, but it looks like things are starting to cool off a little over the next week.
