Black is brown
I photographed this Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa) on Lake Ainsworth this evening. Despite the name, it's brown in colour, not black. The Birdlife Australia webpage says that its only black plumage is a bold stripe that runs across the bird’s face, from its bill to behind its eye.
In New Zealand it's called the Grey Duck. But it's not grey, either.
I've read that the scientific name, supeciliosa, refers to its prominent raised eyebrow.
