Reviving The Art Of Reading
Today started with a heat warning with temperatures expected to climb towards 40c and the public being advised not to travel unless it was absolutely necessary. My brother had contacted his boss at work as the train companies were forecasting that there was going to be severe disruption to the trains with the possibility of the heat causing much slower journeys, cancellations and even the prospect of buckled rails (all of which later happened in different parts of the country). He was also up to date with his work but despite the warnings his boss insisted if he was not coming in he would have to book the day off as holiday. What an a**hole!
Therefore, as he didn't have to go into work we went for a quick early morning run before it got too hot. It was already heading towards 25c before 8 am!
As the heat continued to build we decided we would only go out for a quick drink so we returned to The Kings Arms in Offham for a pint. As before the beer was great and we had a lovely chat with a local post lady who had stopped mid round for a well deserved cooling drink in the intense heat. She chatted away and told us that she has to wear a device strapped to her wrist which tracks that she is moving otherwise she can be accused of "slacking off" - so she was downing her drink with one hand and waving her wrist on her other arm to 'show' that she was still on the move!
After our drink we went for quick walk around the village in the blistering conditions. It felt strangely otherworldly. Today's image is of an old red phone box in the village which has now been repurposed as a "book box", where you can swap and exchange books, and the home of the village's defibrillator. The vast majority of these old red phone boxes have disappeared (I hadn't seen one for ages - I must have missed this one on my previous visit!) and it was so great to see one in such wonderful condition and being put to a useful purpose instead of just being removed. My image was also inspired by my fellow blipper Seelye who had spotted a little red phone box whilst out walking in Phoenix, Arizona (the temperature must have been similar there too!) Thanks Seelye!
The rest of the day was just too hot and we spent it indoors with the curtains drawn to try and keep the heat out and staying topped up with cold drinks (o.k, that may have also included wine!).
