that functions.
All three aspects of that.
But this morning was cool enough to get lots done outdoors and this afternoon I got lots done indoors. The light was so lovely this morning. Humidity looks so beautiful. We walked early so it was a perfectly wonderful 70 degrees. We had a high of 99 today. When the temperature is that high and humidity is combined things get really dangerous for health, although I learned last year that the humidity protects us from wildfires. The heat index in DC today was 105 F or 40.5 C. Yet another wonderful aspect of working from home is avoiding the urban heat island effect - where cities are hotter than the areas outside of them. 

Portugal alone lost 1,000 people due to the heat wave. 

NASA's fire-detecting satellites indicate that Russian battalions are quieter in eastern Ukraine. They captured Severodonetsk and Lysychansk earlier in July so there is less need for artillery. Also the focus is shifting south as Ukraine works to retake Kherson. An additional reason is that Ukraine has used American rockets to blow up Russian ammunition. In one month Ukraine has destroyed 100 high-value targets. Given the size of the fires these were fuel and ammo. This means Russians are pulling back their supplies. 

Russia had too few trucks. Then they lost 1,300 in five months. Now the remaining trucks have to travel much, much further to move supplies. 

Bohdan Dmtruk, a commander in Ukraine, said that after using HIMARS, Russian shelling has decreased by 10 times. 

In Russia, food prices were up 19.1% in June compared with June 2021. Pasta was up 28%. Sugar was up 48% from a year ago. 

Ukraine has opened more than 16,000 investigations into suspected war crimes. Any Russian phone numbers that pinged Ukrainian cell towers can be traced back to their owners. Video of military vehicles can be traced back to individual units. An American facial-recognition program is being used on photos and videos on social media. More than 7,500 suspects have been identified. Those convicted in absentia will be added to Interpol wanted lists and subject to arrest if they leave Russia.
