Great Black Wasp
Oh the buckwheat I've planted is just full of it! I planted the tulip bed with the buckwheat and crimson clover. I knew buckwheat was a great draw for pollinators (having had buckwheat honey at one point which was dark and rich I always wanted a patch for my own bees which maybe will happen at one point). But I was unprepared for the intensity of pollinator life that it attracts. I just stand there amazed any time I walk by. I had been noticing the big wasps (about 1 1/2 inch long) that frequent the flowers and looked them up. The great black has these amazingly blue iridescent wings. The Great Golden Digger wasp in my extra also frequents the flowers. They are both non-aggressive, solitary wasps. They dig holes in the ground for their nest and stuff a grasshopper in as food for their young... So non-aggressive towards humans but not grasshoppers. They are also great pollinators. What is not to love?
I tried to take a video but it just doesn't do justice to the abundance. I'll keep trying
