Sunday morning at the farm
Ruth and Josh have been waiting for one of the nanny goats at the farm to deliver her twins. They'd originally planned to go to London this weekend with the boys, for a friend's leaving do (the friend is moving to Spain, lucky woman). But they knew they needed to keep an eye on the goat. In the event, Nanny produced twins safely on Saturday evening - too late for them all to go.
As a compromise, Ruth went to London on Sunday morning, having made an early visit to the farm to check that all was well with the goat family. She was a bit apprehensive, and wanted Josh to make another check later in the morning. So Richard and I met Josh, Luca and Eben at High Riggs, and kept the boys company while Josh rearranged some electric fencing, designed to protect the new mother and kids from any intrusive interest on the part of the other animals in the field (several ewes and lambs, a rather feisty ram and another nanny goat).
Both boys love the farm, and enjoy doing odd jobs there: collecting eggs, picking fruit and veg, sweeping up in the big barn. In the main, Luca is engrossed with some bunting that hangs in a big outdoor classroom; in one of the extras, he's keen to show me how many bees are buzzing around in a long row of lavender. He seems fearless around bees; I had to gently suggest that actually stroking them might produce a sting. He took this in his stride and we kept watching the bees together. The other extra shows proud mum and day-old kids.
