Day of the Triffids?

This is the latest post box topper outside the Village Hall. It is obviously meant to be a sunflower but I'm not sure whether the green tendrils are meant to be leaves or roots. It looked a little ominous to me as if the flower had the capability to self-propel, putting me in mind of the John Wyndham novel, The Day of the Triffids, that was made into a pretty scary film.
