Trout Lily
In the spring prior to the construction of our new Biology building, several of us invaded a wooded area near the original Biology greenhouse. Our goal was to dig up as many of the spring bulbs that we could and transplant them to our personal gardens.
The area in question was going to be bulldozed, and not only did we want more plant material for our personal gardens, we also wanted to preserve the efforts of EC Smith. He planted a garden of native spring bulbs in the 1960's in an effort to show others on campus the beauty of native plants, and the ease of care of perennials. Several of these species now reside in my garden.
