Some common names sort of make sense....
This is Sanguinaria canadensis, commonly referred to as "blood root." An orange sap that is stored in the rhizome (modified underground stem, NOT a root) provides this colonial, spring ephemeral with its common name.
The most distinctive character, other than the single large white flower (not uncommon amongst spring flowering plants) is the pair of "sheathing", unexpanded leaves that appear to "hug" the stem.
This one likeds to spread (I started with 10-15 rhizomes 10 years ago and now have 4-5 large (30-50 flowers) colonies, but is not invasive.
