Another Grandparenting day

So what is this?, our guide asked us

Different type of day today. We visited the hidden underground street in Norwich, interesting, educational and, most important, cool. Buildings going back to medieval times were covered up in the early 19th century and then forgotten about by the 20th century. They were only rediscovered a few decades ago. It is strange such hidden areas can exist in middle of such a built up area.

Our guide was superb, aiming her presentation at the kids (9 and 10 years old), Horrible History style. Possibly that is why the subject of this blip featured in her talk.

What is it? Well in olden times when water was not safe to drink people drank beer, usually to excess. As public toilets had not been invented gentlemen on their way home made use of dark corners. Some dark corners were used so much the bricks and mortar began to rot, endangering the buildings structure. So these lumps were added, shaped in such a way that resulted in any gentleman using the corner would suffer from a lot of “splash back”.
Sorry to bring the tone down but the kids loved it
