The faded common
It was already 30 degrees when I set off to complete this week's butterfly transect survey. Needless to say the numbers are really falling now, just 20 butterflies in my half hour survey compared with almost 200 a month ago. But it was nice to see some freshly emerged Small Heath. In France it has two alternative names. One is Le Proscris, which I think means 'the banished' (why?, from what?) while the other is Le fadet commun - the faded common - which seems somewhat more appropriate.
