Off On Pulse

I was just using our food processor for making pesto and, whilst washing up the jugs, I was thinking - we’ve had this a long time. In fact this machine is older than our eldest granddaughter who will be 16 in October. I know it is that old because I remember exactly where we bought it. One year we all - us and the two girls and their partners - went to a Food and Drink Festival in Birmingham. This was before there were any marriages and certainly before any grandchildren. We all had a great time, watching demonstrations, wandering round tasting everything.

We were leaving before the four of them, as we were driving back - I think they were using the train. We arranged to meet them before we left at one of the entrances and, as we were waiting, we showed an interest in a Magimix stand, as the lady there was starting to pack up. I knew what she was offering us was a bargain as I had looked these up earlier, so before the four young ones arrived we had bought a food processor.

Amazing how it has lasted this long as it gets a lot of use - Gordon makes his pastry in it, I grate and chop everything in it . . . and make pesto. It is certainly used several times a week. The other funny thing is that, even after that number of years, the new machines have hardly changed from this one - they even have the same number. Maybe the jug bits are a different style but that’s it. I wonder whether a piece of technology like this is developed to such a stage that really there is nothing different that can be done to it. It just does what it is meant to do . . . and that’s that. .
