About digging (and green manure)
I'm a big fan of no-dig. It works. It saves your back, adds nutrients to the soil, improves moisture retention and helps suppress weeds.
Having said that, I'm not a complete no-dig advocate and digging sometimes has its use in the vegetable patch.
Like today, when I wanted to sow green manure on a new bed which has given me 3 crops this season - radishes, lambs lettuce and onions - and is now a bit knackered.
I broke the compacted top layer with a spade, watered heavily and sowed a quick growing green manure mix.
Now there's more humidity in the air and temperatures have cooled down, I'm not too worried about germination success.
