Let the sunshine in
With temperatures having cooled down, grass greening up again, days getting noticeably shorter and humidity levels higher, I decided now was the time to hack cut back my squash/pumpkin jungle vines.
I've been doing it for years and I find it works for several reasons:
- Helps fruit ripen and cure in the sun
- Enables plants to focus their energy on the fruit they've produced as opposed to fruitless vines
- Reduces the number of slugs and snails hiding among the foliage and attacking younger, softer fruit
- Finally gives me access to weeds!
It was a big reveal and final countdown - I have about 20 squashes and pumpkins, definitely a good year!!
