Digger Day!
Bet our neighbours just loved us today, with a noisy compressor driving a road drill to break up the old concrete in our front wall, followed by a JCB digger to excavate a trench for the new foundations:-)
There were the inevitable glitches, of course, but I am still calm, you'll be pleased to hear! A horrible cherry tree in the garden got in the way of the digger, so it was with great delight that we had it taken out altogether. It never had more than half a dozen puny blossoms, followed by a mass of leaves which made an awful mess when they fell in the autumn. We'll be able to replace it with a much nicer tree now!
During the excavations, it was discovered that the services to the house i.e. electricity, phone, gas and water were all much closer to the surface than would be allowed under modern standards, so great care had to be taken not to cut through a vital pipe or cable. So far so good, but this slowed down the work and the builders will have to continue with it tomorrow instead of getting it all done on the one day.
Hope the weather stays reasonably dry and the trench doesn't fill up!
