RRS Discovery

We made a trip to Dundee to visit the Royal Research Ship Discovery.

The ship was the first purpose built vessel sent to explore the Antarctic in 1901. Captained by Robert Falcon Scott, she was trapped in the ice for almost 3 years which allowed her crew to undertake the first extensive exploration of the fauna, flora and geology of the Antarctic.

Dundee Heritage Trust have done an excellent job with the visitor centre and exhibition. The ship itself is in immaculate condition. We had her to ourselves (bar an old dude polishing the brasses on deck), and I felt a shiver down the spine as I peered into Sir Ernest Shackleton's cabin.

Unfortunately I haven't done the view justice with this pic, but it was the best I could choose with two impatient bairns nipping at heel. Can you spot the Crow's Nest barrel on the middle mast?
