Somerset?

You could be forgiven for thinking this shot was taken on the Somerset levels with the Mendip Hills in the background. These drains (or rhynes) are a common sight there as they seek to allow water to flow away from low lying land. This one is near Grange-over-Sands and is a picture of the River Winster. This is a conduit for water, often substantial amounts, that fall in the south east Lake District. The important thing is that it is kept clear of weeds and silt which can be the cause of flooding. It discharges (behind my viewpoint) into Morecambe Bay and out to sea.
