The Meavy Oak

We sat outside and had lunch today at the Royal Oak in Meavy, on the western edge of Dartmoor. The pub stands next to the village green where the Meavy Oak stands. The oak is believed to be over 900 years old and was apparently used as a Gospel Oak, or open-air pulpit before the church was built in the early 13th century!
The light early this afternoon was very harsh, which made this very much a record shot, rather than an enduring image. Still, looking at the image again now, and remembering how it felt to stand beside a living being that is so ancient, has provided an enduring memory.
