Serenity
Isn't she lovely!
We collected her this afternoon, and I took the picture out of the frame to clean the glass.
Folded tight inside was an excerpt of a story from the Launceston Times (Tasmania). It's made the image even more intriguing, Who was she, and why would there be a story of an escaped convict murderer folded in the back of her portrait? Was she the victim? Or did she write the story under a male pen-name? She is clearly mid-Victorian, and the painting is exquisite. The picture is about 4" x 6 " by the way. Not large.
More research is needed, it's clear. But in the meantime, the story is folded back again in the back of the picture.
I am so very pleased we bought her.
