Changes Afoot
This is Robert, the consistently cheerful and helpful man who works in the hardware department at the much-loved Independent Bakers & Larner's Department Store in Holt. The store in the Market Place was built in 1631 and has served as a shop since 1730, and the Baker family have been involved since around 1760 to 1770, which is a remarkable achievement. Apparently the plan in this part of the store is to remove the shop fittings, revealing the original flint structure and to paint it blue and white, the store's colours. I think it's fabulous that the heritage of the building will be on display and certainly Robert is enthusiastic about the changes which is great. I'm looking forward to seeing how the goods will be displayed when it's all completed.
Following a coffee in the above mentioned store, B and I went along to one of the monthly talks at our local library. Today's talk was given by one of the wardens at the huge 25,000 acre Holkham Estate. He showed us some photos of the fabulous wildlife found on the estate and told us all about how they manage the estate for the benefit of wildlife and visitors. It was most enlightening and entertaining.
