Art's Com?lex
St. Margaret's House, 151 London Road, Edinburgh. An unprepossessing 1970s office block, the building fell into disuse around 2006. Demolition and redevelopment plans were made, however in 2008 it was given over to 'Art's Com?lex' (the '?' is a stylised 'p'). This impressive venture is aimed at providing affordable studio and exhibition space for artists in the city. Due to the building's size, 200 artists/performers can rent a studio at any one time! Alongside this, there's 11,000 square feet of gallery space that can be used by community groups such as martial arts classes. Art's Com?lex states on its website that its aims are:
? To create a financially viable space for the artistic community in Scotland which captures the public imagination and inspires creativity, innovation and sustainability among its leasing partners;
? To encourage and support emerging artists, creative industries and community groups involved in the arts and art therapy;
? To reach out to local communities through exhibitions, arts education events and participatory projects;
? To become a major player in the Scottish, UK and International cultural calendars;
? To create a sustainable business approach that can flex with the economic climate.
It was here that I saw this exhibition that I blipped last month. As of yet there are no announcements I can find as to whether the project will last beyond the five years it has been given use of St. Margaret's House before the wrecking ball moves in.
