giant

When D drove into college this morning, I went with him as far as Irongray Church and walked home. On the way, I discovered that what I had thought (when passing it in the car) to be a plastic bag, was in fact a giant puffball mushroom. You can see how big it is by comparing it with my size 7 foot :-)

The giant puffball (Calvatia gigantic) is edible. I didn't pick it today, not having a sharp knife with me and not really wanting to carry the thing home. Also we have some of D's curry left over from last night. It seems a bit of a shame to uproot this impressive fungus but maybe another day I might be tempted...
