Pembroke Castle
Something of a Pembrokeshire Greatest Hits day today. We began at Pentre Ifan, a huge dolmen constructed about 4500 years ago. Its capstone is 5 metres long and weighs over 16 tonnes. There are two theories as to how and why it was built.
Then Pembroke Castle, built from 1093 onwards, with an intact wall surrounding a large grassy area with some towers in varying degrees of preservation. It is very well set-up for younger visitors, which makes it a rather lacking in genuine medieval atmosphere. But none the worse for that really.
Then a beach - Whitesands, near St David's Head, with surf pounding the shore and plenty of surfers enjoying the ride. The coastal path also leads to some tiny bays and rocky headlands. Also, miniature dolmens.
