New Quay
No, not Newquay, which is in Cornwall, but New Quay (Cei Newydd), Ceredigion. I had read in advance that Dylan Thomas had visited New Quay on a number of occasions and lived there for almost a year in the 1940s. It is widely agreed that he wrote about New Quay the small town of Llareggub in his great poem Under Milk Wood. Sadly I didn't get to see the:
sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack
fishingboatbobbingsea
both because it was daylight and as the tide was out
Earlier we visited Cardigan (or Aberteifi). A quiet town with a developing cultural scene and some attractive old streets. The Castle isn't a patch on Pembroke. It was initially built in 1196 but its main intact building, Castle Green House, was completed in 1808. Cardigan was the site of the first competitive Eisteddfod (literally "sitting together") - a celebration of Welsh culture.in 1176.
