Three first prizes!
Today was our allotment autumn social and show. I always like to enter a few classes as the standards are not that high and taking part is important!
We had none of the usual fruit to enter so I picked some small dwarf green beans and selected five that sort of matched but were not identical! We were so surprised that we got first prize but…I’m guessing they were young, crunchy and tasted OK ( all the fruit and veg had to be washed in tap water first ready for the judges to taste) .
There were two classes for flower arrangements. One a traditional arrangement with flowers such as dahlias , roses etc. I did not have any of these so I did a vase with verbena, buddhlea , cosmos and various vegetation…it won first prize.See extra.
The second arrangement was meant to be ‘naturalistic’. I didn’t really know what that meant but though it meant something without actual flowers…seed heads, grasses etc. I foraged on our plot and a couple of neighbours and found a suitable jug …hence the arrangement in the photo which also won first prize!
3 out of 3, amazing. Best results ever. We only get rosettes, no actual prizes but it feels good to have made the effort to take part. I was also delighted that the sisters on our next door plot entered lots of things and were delighted to get about six rosettes. Very good for their first year , they were pleased I had encouraged them to enter.
There was a barbecue and a big raffle as there is every year. I got one winning ticket for two jars of jam or pickle of my choice from a lady who always makes lots.
