Grasmere

The view from our lunch stop. Grasmere, the village on the other side, and then the pass of Dunmail Raise beyond. It represents the Lake District watershed. In general terms north of there everything flows towards the Solway. Southwards, everything flows towards Morecambe Bay. Apart from that which ends up in the Mersey estuary: the Thirlmere Aqueduct passes under Dunmail Raise on its way to Greater Manchester, from where via households and businesses and through wastewater plants it ends up in the River Irwell and Manchester Ship Canal.

A good day. I am always amazed at how busy the Lakes are, when I first came it wasn’t like this at all. It’s now on the international tourism map, as evidenced by the Japanese youngsters enjoying the delights of a large cave (extra).
